Is it possible to use the log book in Canada under Canadian rules, so as to never run out of hours? claudeb@XXX.net
The intent of the Hours of Service regulations is to prevent you from working until you drop. There are ways of logging you hours so that you get the maximum opportunity to work while still getting the rest you need. The difficulty comes in understanding the concept of cycle switching. For a detailed explanation, please see the Careers section on the highwaySTAR website, look under the “past stories” listing, and scroll down to a heading called “Safety and Compliance: Recap This.” The answer to your question, by the way, is no. Even when you’re carefully tracking your hours, you’ll eventually have to stop the wheels long enough catch up on your sleep.
