I recently got a ticket in N.Y. for not having an “HUT” sticker and I'm trying to ascertain where the responsibility lies in obtaining the new decal. Should I have been responsible for the decal? chris.S@XXX.ca
At the end of the day, I'd say you should have advised the carrier that your sticker had expired, and asked for a new one. I know there are no dates on the HUT sticker, but in any case, when you switch carriers, you're running on a new tax account (unless you file your own IFTA tax). Therefore, the onus would have also been on you to ensure you had all the necessary permits and documentation before heading into NY. It’s also a requirement of the pre-trip inspection to verify the validity of all plates and permits. Probably not the answer you were looking for, but that's how I see it.
